About Hudnut Company

Hudnut Company started out as a research and development company focused on creating practical solutions to environmental and energy problems. This work resulted in them receiving a National Industrial Competitiveness through Energy,> Environment, and Economics Program (NICE3) grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to further their investigation work. Over the last several years, while doing research and development work on a number of electronic projects, the Hudnut Company had been simultaneously monitoring the progress being made in light emitting diode (LED) emitter design technology and performance, particularly as applied to the relatively new field of solid-state lighting (SSL). When a rural public utility district commented on the long-term cost of pole lamps being directly and adversely affected by the high frequency of lamp changes caused by wind vibration-induced lamp failures, Hudnut sought out manufacturers of energy efficient LED lamps of suitable size to meet the physical demands of area lighting, only to find that no viable source for area lighting products using LED emitters could be found.

Because of Hudnut Company’s president having extensive experience in the electronics field, the design, development, and construction of a unique line of SSL products, based on LED emitters, was a natural course for the company to follow. After several SSL design prototypes were built and tested by an independent laboratory, the company was able to specifically identify the capabilities and limitations of LED lighting technology and the types of applications where LED would be both suitable and superior to conventional lighting. Based on this, the focus of the company became the development of LED lighting products, drawing on its considerable in-house experience with the electronics assembly industry and extensive contacts in both the public and private sector of the energy industry.

Hudnut Company’s manufacturing breakthrough was the development of a unique modular LED circuit that can function either alone or in combination. Each module is a complete LED lighting segment, including the emitters, heat dissipation material, reflector surface, and the circuitry needed to operate on all common power supplies. Hudnut has received an Underwriters Laboratory (UL) approval for these LED modules, and when the assembled array is installed in a UL-approved fixture, the complete assembly is also UL-approved. These rugged, long-lived modules give Hudnut the flexibility to install them into most currently available UL-approved light housings specified by lighting designers, architects, and retrofit customers. Hudnut also uses their modules in its newly developed line of lighting products that take full advantage of the LED’s small size and low power requirements for a wide variety of industrial, commercial, and residential lighting applications. The company provides a variety of LED lighting products for use in industrial, commercial, and residential applications, and can custom engineer LED lighting to meet unique client needs.
